Lake Street Council is launching a new program to help Lake Street business owners and employees access mental health counseling services at no out-of-pocket cost.

It has been a difficult 18 months for people in the Lake Street community. Small business owners and employees have faced immense personal and professional challenges brought on by the pandemic and by the unjust murder of George Floyd.  Our community has been resilient, but accumulated emotions like stress, anxiety, and grief can take a toll on our health and happiness.

Counseling can be a valuable tool for working through personal challenges and identifying a path towards greater wellbeing. Through this program, eligible small business owners and employees can access confidential mental health counseling services at one of our partner providers at no out-of-pocket cost.

This program is supported by a generous donation from UnitedHealth Group. Each listed provider has received grant funding to offer short-term services for no out-of-pocket cost to eligible participants.

Participant Eligibility

Participants must either

  1. Own and operate a business or lead a nonprofit organization that is located in the Lake Street corridor.

  2. Be employed at a business or nonprofit organization is that is located in the Lake Street corridor.

The Lake Street corridor is defined as the area bounded by West River Parkway on the east, 26th Street on the north, the border of Minneapolis and St. Louis Park on the west, and 34th Street on the south.

Participants do not need to be members of Lake Street Council or any other organization to qualify for funding or to receive assistance. Immigration status does not impact eligibility, and services will be offered at no out-of-pocket cost regardless of health insurance status.

In general, this program is targeted to help interested participants enter a new relationship with a mental health care provider. However, if an eligible participant has already begun receiving services from an approved provider but is struggling to afford ongoing services, they may also ask their provider to receive this subsidy.

Enrollment Process

To begin receiving services, follow these steps:

  1. Select one of the participating care providers from the table below.

  2. Contact the provider and let them know that you are seeking to enroll in counseling. You may be asked to provide some information about yourself in an intake process.

  3. During the intake process with most providers, please state that you are a Lake Street business owner or employee and that you want to participate in Lake Street Council’s Be Well Lake Street program. They may ask you for basic information about your business to verify your eligibility. *See exception below

  4. You will be matched with a provider and begin receiving services.

*The exception to this step is Walk-In Counseling Center, which offers free services for anyone regardless of business ownership or employment status. If you select Walk-In as a provider, you do not need to share anything about your identity or business in order to qualify for services at no out-of-pocket costs to you. You may be asked for a name to allow Walk-In to find your file, but you can offer any name you wish.

What to Know Before You Begin Services

Your participation in any of the mental health programs described below will be entirely confidential and voluntary. Lake Street Council will never be informed of your participation in any of the services described below.

At the start of your services, providers will communicate how many sessions you will be able to receive at no out-of-pocket cost. In most cases, we expect that providers will only provide brief treatment (10-12 sessions) at no charge, but you can discuss options for extending your treatment with your provider.

Short term therapy is not always effective and can carry risks, which you should discuss with your provider at the beginning of services. You may end your participation at any time you choose.
